Context

MSSL engaged us during the preliminary design phase of the Solar Orbiter mission. The objective was to investigate the feasibility of the thermal control system for the SWA-EAS instrument, based on preliminary inputs from MSSL.

MSSL’s research covers all aspects of space research, from understanding the Sun and its interaction with the planets, to understanding galaxies and the matter that makes up the universe. MSSL builds and operates cutting-edge space hardware for multinational space missions, and also offers state-of-the-art test facilities for ground and space-based technology.

Problem

MSSL required a comprehensive thermal design study to determine the viability of the thermal control system for the Solar Orbiter spacecraft’s SWA-EAS instrument.

Solution

Nitrexo approached the challenge with precision and expertise:

  • Developed a thermal model of the SWA-EAS within ESATAN-TMS using inputs from MSSL.
  • Conducted numerous analysis cases to study the SWA-EAS thermal performance in various configurations throughout the mission.
  • Optimized the radiative heat exchange between the SWA-EAS and its environment, ensuring all components maintained their design operating temperature range.
  • Defined the requirements and optimal locations for survival/operational heaters and their dedicated thermal sensors.
  • Produced a Design Definition Report detailing the Thermal Control System (TCS) characteristics and a Design Justification File Report, which included the thermal model description, main temperature results, and heater power consumption.

Outcome

  • A comprehensive ESATAN-TMS thermal model tailored for the Solar Orbiter mission.
  • Detailed Design Definition File (DDF) and Design Justification File (DJF) reports, providing insights into temperature results and heater power budgets.
  • Solar Orbiter was successfully launched.
  • Solar Orbiter went on to complete its first close pass through the Sun’s corona, bringing its specially designed collection of instruments closer to the Sun than ever before.
